Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mom and baby. It is important for moms to know what normal breastfeeding behavior is and what to do when breastfeeding isn’t going like you expected. The Medical Center helps expectant and new moms with successful breastfeeding through prenatal classes and lactation consultations following delivery.
Expectant moms are encouraged to attend the Breast Is Best class to start preparing yourself for breastfeeding before the baby arrives. After delivery, the nursing staff will assist mom as she begins breastfeeding and certified lactation consultants are available for any difficulties. Certified lactation consultants are available for difficulties getting started with breastfeeding. Once mom and baby go home, outpatient lactation consults are available for problems with breastfeeding, breastfeeding management or individual preparation for returning to work while maintaining an adequate breast milk supply for your infant.
