Lactation Services

Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mom and baby. It is important for moms to know what normal breastfeeding behavior is and what to do when breastfeeding isn’t going like you expected. The Medical Center helps IBCLC Care Awardexpectant and new moms with successful breastfeeding through prenatal classes and lactation consultations following delivery.

Expectant moms are encouraged to attend the Breast Is Best class to start preparing yourself for breastfeeding before the baby arrives. While a new mom is in the hospital, nurses from the Nursery will assist mom as she begins breastfeeding and will evaluate the baby's breastfeeding. Certified lactation consultants are available for difficulties getting started with breastfeeding. Once mom and baby go home, outpatient lactation consults are available for problems with breastfeeding, breastfeeding management or individual preparation for returning to work while maintaining an adequate breast milk supply for your infant.

Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is the best food for your baby. It has the right amount of all the nutrients your baby needs. It also provides immunities that protect your infant from illnesses such as respiratory infections, pneumonia, diarrhea, and future risks from childhood cancers and diabetes. Research has also shown that breastfeeding reduces the risk of your child having SIDS.

Breastfeeding also has benefits for mom. It helps build bones and may reduce your risk for some types of cancer such as breast cancer. Breastfeeding also helps mom lose the weight gained while pregnant.

Breastmilk can not be manufactured or duplicated. It is free and always ready, no matter where you are. And just as important as the health benefits of breastmilk, breastfeeding helps you build a special bond with your baby.
